Too many servers...

So as we all know, there are a whole lot of servers.

i believe eihrul hosts 3 masterservers: Sauerbraten CTF edition, Sauerbraten trooper edition and Sauerbraten justice edition (current).

Justice has 6 pages of servers (when i say 6 pages i mean pages 7 8 and 9 are Older Protocol), only 1 and a half pages are filled with USED servers. I believe this is because all the servers are "auth", (something that disables /setmaster). Most people are looking for a server where they can enter, claim master and load whatever they want.

A big problem with XSBS is that it automatically sets mode to veto when started, even if its an "auth" server, this should be fixed.

you should only host a server for a purpose, for example a clan server where everyone meets, if you want more people to come into it you should allow setmaster 1, because this way people will be able to do what they want if the server is empty.

Servers outlined with the Oval are un-modded servers.

I actually find it quiet nice to have a lot of servers (Nice to highjack one evry once in a while to have a private 1on1 :P ). The ones with more players automatically get boxed to the top of the list anyways, hence no long searches for servers in action :)

However since we're at the topic of servers I wanted to ask a question; What do you think of the idea of having a filtering system? eg. Filter for players, game mode, private/open, etc etc etc? Would make things a lot easier to find looking through servers :) Should be a fairly easy if statements no?

haha, yes.

Its nice to have allot of servers to hop into and do whateva you want, but most servers are auth, so no claiming master.

There is no limit of hosting servers and there shouldnt be any limits. Even tough, i do dislike there are a lot of servers where you need the auth key to take master, while it would be much better just to have it without auth key. There are a lot of servers that are getting hosted for nothing because of that (not that many people have an auth key, compared to the rest of the people playing sauerbraten)...
im not font of the auth key anyways, but thats just what eihrul wants, so be it.
(of course i would like to have auth key too, but because i heard you need a reference from another auth key-user (or something like that), wich i dont got)...

of course there enough servers where you do can claim master and just feel free whatever you want to do (exept sometimes of course :P), but there are so many servers that arent getting used just because they are "authed". As i noticed at the moment, there are more then 30 "authed" servers with no people on it (thats like 2 pages) and only a few servers (like 5) that are open (bad connection-servers included)...

the "older protocol" pages could be deleted. this can be done manually by deleting the ip addreses in "servers.cfg" (the 60 unusefull "older protocol" servers arent getting showed up anymore on that way). this counts for the, page with servers that are on "waiting for response" too.

too many auth servers, they're unused because you can't go in, claim master and do whatever you want.

I think it's frequently lamented that Sauerbraten doesn't have the sort functionality (ping, players, title, ... etc) like Assaultcube does. I hope that eventually gets resolved, however at the moment the there are no problems caused by there being extra servers online because they don't really get in the way.

I don't know about other time zones but, generally when I'm on there are plenty of open servers available for those needing them.

I run my own without auth, simply because I can. Besides, it is nice to have around when you need it.

Servers with Auth:
The auth servers seem to be more intended for gameplay servers ( not featuring co-op ), so people can play without worrying about a bad master coming in and booting people.
With that, there are people who have auth which hold the ability to, if needed, regulate negative behavior on servers that don't allow masters. Or to straighten out servers that have a master who is displaying unacceptable behavior, and is thus ruining the game for the other players.

I think I wrote about my opinion on this in one of the threads on the cubeengine site before:
I do realise that auth servers are meant for gameplay where people shouldnt have to worry about one person claiming master and kicking everyone. That's also a nice thing and I'm glad auth has been added for that purpose. But regardless of that, there are way too many auth servers - there were too many back when it was added and there are too many now. When I complained about it earlier I got an answer I should just be patient because the serverlist will balance itself and more open servers will appear. It did not.

I don't want to say that the situation is catastrophic now :P It's still possible to find servers to play on, but it would be MUCH more convenient if most of the servers were open instead of auth. Because honestly, most auth servers are just for the birds. Back then I suggested to have open servers as a default and to require a key similar to authkeys but for servers to open an auth server (or just something that makes it more difficult to set up an auth server so not every Joe sets up an auth server when it's not needed at all), so those who really want one could still get such a server, which are mainly clans who have servers for gameplay. I think it would work quite well this way, there would be enough auth servers still, but the majority of the empty auth servers that are useless for unexperienced players would turn into open servers, available for coopedit, private duels, etc.

I suppose that's another problem, new players will maybe not understand the difference between auth and open servers and get frustrated quickly about the fact that in most places they can't get master and can't set mastermode 2 which is essential for 1on1s and decent coopedit sessions.

Btw, since some people have been mentioning other things to improve about the setlist: Please make an option to enable/disable the constant updating because it's really annoying to find a server or get a good idea of how many servers there are where I can play whatever when the serverlist is mixed through every 3 seconds :P

i personally use the iS master server for the extra options you get. my favorite is hiding older protocol/non responding servers. 5 pages less. quick connect also works perfectly for my most visited servers :)
