Blurb An egyptian map focused mainly on ctf, but it is also set up for all game types.

Detailed description

This is a large map, designed for 8 players or more. The map's main focus was Capture The Flag, or ctf. However, the map is set up to play other games as well, such as Free For All (ffa), Protect, and Capture.

The map started out as a larger pyramid temple, but it was too hard to find people, so the walls of the large pyramid were done away with, which left a bunch of pyramid rooms in the ground. It looked something like a geological excavation, hence the map name "Excavation."

This map includes "Advanced Stargates" complete with wormhole transitions, Sniper Towers, Pyramids, Levitating Platforms, and three levels with many paths to and from the other side.

Hopefully this map brings many hours of fun for all. Enjoy.

I didn't know what you were talking about when you said I stole your style, so I had to go check out your map posts. You are totally right. I had never seen that map before. ( http://www.quadropolis.us/node/2294 ) It is the same type of setup. I don't know what to say, but I didn't do it on knowingly. On a side note, our maps are rated about the same. Maybe people don't like this whole Eqypt thing.

This map has a lot of nice features and details but there are some pretty major flaws as well.

* I am always pointing out how maps are too monotone and boring with color, but this map seems to have too much color. Perhaps a better way to put is that the colors are unfocused. For me, the map ended up feeling more like a Egyptian themed amusement park rather then an ancient structure being excavated. (As a first step, I would defiantly get rid of the green grass and I would redo those two horrible rooms with the red circle ceilings)

* The lighting is practically on fullbright and some shadows look like those from a night sporting event. The contrast of light and dark is what makes a map's lighting visually interesting. This map does not have enough dark areas, or enough shadows in general, and the shadows that are there often are cast in multiple directions. Try to take the ambient down from 90, make lights more proportional to their sources, create gaps in the lighting, and reduce the number of lights overall.

* Geometrically, there are a lot of details but in the finished map, the design sometimes felt discontinuous and poorly thought out. Even for arena style games, I think it is usually good to look at the map from a functional standpoint as a starting points, to ground the map in reality even if what you are creating is something impossible. (I would also get rid of the ability to go around on the exterior wall of the map which just ruins the illusion that there you are not actually playing in a box. )

Thanks for the input Matt. The map name really doesn't fit the map, does it? Some of us were talking on-line about how this map looked a lot like Las Vegas, so we came up with the name "Ancient Vegas." The only problem with that name is I didn't feel like adding slot machines and strippers. ;-)

I'm horrible at coming up with names for things, so if you have any suggestions on what we could name the map, I am open to change.

You aren't the first one to suggest getting rid of the grass, and that bright red circle room has always bugged me, so those are going to change. I do like the ability to run around the outside of the map. It adds to the game play, but maybe I can do some trails in the side walls, without putting players all the way on top.

I've been thinking about what you said concerning the brightness of this map. You said to get rid of lights, but in reality, what it needs is lots of smaller lights, without the huge bright lights. The huge bright lights cause multiple shadow castings, and make the map bright, which I personally don't mind. Once it is all said and done, this is after all, nothing more than a game arena. I've checked out other maps that are getting good ratings, and they have tons of lights, way more than this map. So really, this map needs lots more light detail.

I tried deleting lights, and resizing the remaining ones, like you said, but the map was too dark. Also, I'm thinking white light doesn't work well on Egypt maps. A white light with a yellow hue works good, and gives great contrast on these textures.

We'll see if I ever get enough time to do anything about all of this.

Yay, you finnaly subbmited it up to quad linux... Tell me when you are getting on, and i'll help you fix any bugs left, or re-do some of the lighting like matt bierner talked about...

you got a freaky style , but sometimes this style is a little bit too freaky
- you sometimes used futuristic textures for an egyptan themed map
- some things dont fit the egyptan theme

all in all you made a freaky map
