Detailed description

Hello All

After 2 years I finely found some time to do a new map for Sauerbraten. It is accompanied by a part of my new "greGor" texture set and some useful map models.

All textures are high resolution 1024x12024 and 2048x2048 and they are saved as JPG files. They are used in game with a 0.25 and 0.5 scale to get a higher Texel density for bigger screen resolutions. The style of the Thor2 map is an SF / industrial look unlike the Thor map that as been in a somewhat fantasy / medieval setting.

The full resolution version of the map / "greGor" texture set is later also going to be available ( PNG files losses compression but it is then a 177 mb download )

Use the external download link the file GK_Thor2_Map_Textures_Objekts_LowRes.zip is 18 mb and includes all new textures and map models.

!!! The current Thor2 map is not working with the SVN version see follow-up posts for details. !!!

I update the Thor2 map for the new 2009 build the file is on my FTP (I also added some better lighting in to it)

Ive downloaded it, the map models all ended up in the wrong place =S making it not terribly playable for me, but I'm still giving 5 stars, i love the models and textures.
I'll try to get it to load right over here.

I rebuild the zip file it should work now

that should fix whatever happened with the map models.

they are supposed to be in "Sauerbraten\packages\models\GK_MaxStudiosDE/*"

Well I just downloaded it, and it doesn't really seem to work at all.
This is what it looks like:

EDIT: Ok, I tried to start it in sauerbraten CTF, and it works fine there. So the problem seems to be that something has been changed in svn. I don't know what it is, but you should fix it, or you map won't work anymore as soon as the new release comes out :P

Now about the map: I love the textures and mapmodels, and how you put it into the map! Unfortunately, the lights don't look very good, please work on them :)

You are right that defiantly looks wrong. I build the map the old 2008 version so it could be that the SVN version results in problems. It looks to me like there has been a shift in the order that the map models are arranged in the map file. So I would say for now uses the map with an older build to see it in a working condition and I see what I can do to fix it.

My suspicion is that the number of standard included map models has changed and therefore my altered list has been sifted. If this should be the case then it could be a bug and a thing that is worth fixing in a different place.

Looks like I have to get the SVN version.

Edit: I Just talked to the engine main programmer it is a problem with the map entity system that uses direct index number in the map file. These results in a scenario where the local map specific entity’s end up at the end of the list of standard map models. Hence if in a new version the main list changes the map looks broken because the indexes have been sifted by the number of new entries in the main listing. There is defiantly a missing feature so I think if someone likes to come up with a better programmed solid system it is likely to be welcome.

In regards to the lighting it should look better if the right models are loaded in the right places but I have a look and see what can be improved. Do you have any particular suggestions?

Actually It's easier than that, I wonder why noone comes up with that idea :P
There's a file called default_map_models.cfg that loads the default models. In the SVN version, there are more models, so yours are in the wrong slot. Solution: Copy the default_map_models.cfg from the old sauerbraten into your thor2.cfg, and write mapmodelreset in front of it ;)
I tried it, and the mapmodels are in the right slots now, but they seem to have a problem with their rotation... I guess it's something script-related, too, but i don't know why. Maybe you should ask someone how to fix that. Just keep in mind for the future, if you use additional textures or models, work with texturereset/mapmodelreset ;)

And about the lights, I was judging the lights of the working version of thor2 of course ;) I think it looks a bit unrealistic because i noticed that there is at least one bright light source in the middle of the map that makes no sense at all, i.e. there's no lamp or anything else that justifies its existence :P

This is a solution to makes my map work but it will possibly break others that use the new default map models file. I am making a special version of the map for the new build. The Problem with the rotation could be linked to a new way of loading OBJ files in the new build I look in to it.

No That's not going to happen, you shouldnt replaced the default_map_models.cfg ifle of course, but add the old one to your cfg ;)
If you do that, everyone will USUALLY have the new cfg but the old one on your map.
As I said though, for some reason, the mapmodels have a wrong vertical rotation. I don't know how to fix that..

The OBJ loding code has been changed I see if I can fix it by using objyaw and objpitch. Otherwise I have to export the meshes from my 3D app.

Use "mmodel" not the deprecated "mapmodel" command and it should work fine..

I think you need more healthboosts. There really aren't enough :P

As for the layout, it's really quite good. At a first glance it just looked like a bunch of floating hallways, but there are more things.. It should be fun to play on.

Ty for making mapmodels and textures. They're all good in their own respects, but in this map they work very well. The actual platform ones (that you are meant to walk on) could be shortened because they're so long that outside this map they're not particularly useful.

..The healthboosts and quads are still loading..

The jumppads kinda remind me of those snakes you burn to attract and kill mosquitos. But they are pretty cool.

Anyways, great effort. The overall result looks great. The only thing that might be improved is the area in that tunnel that you heightmapped and it looks a little poor but other than that this is great.
