Detailed description

Clarification: the map is just a demonstration. The cfg in packages/aard/boxtex is the point.

This is a demo map I've entitled "Avocado" after Aard's "Guacamole". The demo map is now in omega, so it has DM, Capture and CTF support, and I have no plans of really adding anything else. I'm assuming that playability and visuals are OK, aside from SheeEtin no one has given me any criticism or pointers.

The map is pretty symmetrical, though the river/path in the middle throws things off a tiny bit. Nashaii and I did some playing around with vegetation and discovered that the grid palette doesn't work so great for making attractive plants: I think Aard hit it on the head, and I don't want to copy his art, so I'm just SOL. :D

Feel free to use the alt_package cfg in maps of your own, don't worry about crediting or anything.

A very nice map; I just ran through the whole thing.

I'm not sure if I should review this map like I do all others.
Well, I guess I will.
The geometry is just fine. Nothing wrong anywhere. (Well, I don't really like the upper part of the trees... does that count? You might also want to look at the gridpower 3 cubes (and their textures) around the towers.) I think the underground river passage thing was a very nice touch.
Texturing? No problems, though I think it'd be a good idea to make the jumppads a little more distinct.
On the subject of jumppads, the jumppads to the towers don't get you up just by running at them... You have to jump on them or bounce twice.
The lighting is rather ugly, but I guess that can't be avoided when you use these textures.

All in all, a nice map with nice textures. Can't wait to try my hand at using these myself.

EDIT: hmm... There are three "real" textures, where one scaled one would do... A huge waste of 14.2 kB! Oh noes!

o_0 Holy crap, you're right. >_> Uhm, it was... deliberate, yeah. Because this is an alpha, so I used the letter A. And stuff. >_>

Sheetin: yes, the tower jumppads do not take you all the way up, I actually spent a good amount of time figuring out exactly how much I wanted them to be. The idea is that an experienced player will know that they have to jump onto those 'pads, if they want to et up there quickly. A newcomer will have to waste a couple of seconds bouncing. Just my way of trying to reward experience, I'm looking for other little ways. (fake rocks?)

I'm gonna ask Aard if he minds me making a 256 sketch texture to use for the background stuff, but I have no plans of switching out the small textures, because if I do I'll loose the variability in the small texture, where it matters a bit more, you know? I don't want the edges to be too consistent, just generally consistent.

About the lighting: it definitely needs work. I was playing around with blue lighting in the tunnels before I uploaded this, trying to make the water seem to be affecting the light, but I think that in retrospect that was a really bad idea. Really and truly, I probably need to go through the whole map with a bunch of large, weak lights to try and get a consistent flow. Note of interest, it's really easy to use the lights in this map to create color gradients, rather than trying to do it with shaders. Another note of interest, I was really considering doing the lighting manually, with darkened textures, but I decided that it would take too long. :)

I guess I can get past the concept because it was intentional (the basic blocks). One thing missing in this that guacamole had is there's no way to get to the top. That was basically my favorite thing about guacamole. oh well. No offence but I don't understand why this is so popular. Sure it's incredibly basic in a kiddish way but that's not necessarily a good thing... If this was done in any other texture and things were rounded out it would not be front page material so I think this map is popular solely on the novelty of the texture you used. Sorry :P

Dude, there's rockets and armour aplenty, and a quad right in the middle of the map. There is no reason you shouldn't be able to get on the hills. If I had really not wanted people up there I would have clipped it off. Being indifferent, I neither clipped it nor took the extra time to make a path up there.

The reason this is on the front page (at least as far as I know) is the texture config. The map is just a demo, as I so tongue-tiedly stated before. The point is that Sauer can, with three textures and just a little typing, produce a full gamut of color that is easy to use and adjust to your needs, and runs at a blistering speed.

Anyone else have some map design requests before I reupload this map, now with spellchecking?

Rough brown cubes would make a rather nice cave... I mean "rough" almost on the level of the trees (which are also ugly, come to think of it).

Correct, I promoted this node to the front page based on the value the texture set provides to the community. There is already another map using it too :)
